Rocky is a Hollywood movie starring Sylvester Stallone as the lead role of a boxer who is looking to make a name for himself. He is one of the most iconic characters in film history. Even if you have not watched the film (which you definitely should do) you will have heard the iconic soundtrack eye of the tiger blasting out across gyms. Every time I watch the movie myself I am inspired to work out, get fitter and grow bulging biceps. I have an urge to learn boxing and fighting skills to beat up the bad guys. As I was watching the movie for the umpteenth time last weekend I noticed that as a Digital Marketer there was a lot for me to learn from Rocky as well. Let’s see what we can learn about Digital Marketing from Rocky.
For those that don’t know, Rocky was written by Sylvester Stallone. The producers of the film wanted to buy the rights to the movie but did not want to cast Sly as the main lead. This was one condition that Sylvester had to anyone that was willing to make the movie with him; he had to be cast as the lead. As offers started cooling down, he did not panic. He knew he had a good product on his hands and he persevered with his belief. Soon he got an offer that let me stay on as lead and the rest is history. If it wasn’t for his belief in himself and his perseverance he would not be an internationally recognized film star. He would only be the guy that wrote Rocky.
He also believed in his project as was willing to make sacrifices to make sure that it was completed. Digital Marketers should also be able to have perseverance. Believe in your work and good will come of it. Stay patient and focused especially dealing with those SEO tasks because they can take up a lot of time, but when you finally hit your targets, the thrill you feel is unimaginable.
Rocky learned how to fight, how to be the best boxer from his coach Mickey. Mickey was not the most well-known coach but he had the practical experience teaching for years. For Rocky, Mickey was the best coach possible because he understood Rocky like no one else did. Even though Rocky was fighting for the World Boxing Championship he did not have the best equipment to train with or the money to afford them. What he had was a good team. The people that surrounded him were all well experienced and had good knowledge. They were able to push him farther than his limits. You are only able to do your best work when you are pushed beyond your comfort zone. Rocky was able to constantly move out of his comfort zone because of the encouragement of his teammates. He was able to fight harder, stronger, faster better because he wanted to show the world that he and his small team can do it.
If you know anything about the Rocky movies, one thing you will hear constantly over and over is that he had heart. Rocky was a fighter through and through. He did not know the word “give-up”. Even though the odds were against him and he was almost always fighting a losing battle he was willing to give it all he had and more to continue. When you learn Digital Marketing in Pune or you are doing Digital Marketing you should also assume a no give up strategy. There will be days in your career where you will not be able to think you can continue. You may want to quit and look for a more comfortable job, but that is not what Digital Marketing is about. It is about getting down and making sure you do a great job every day.
It sure did help that Rocky loved what he did. He was not in it for the money or the fame. He just wanted to prove to the world that he is the best boxer. And deep down inside isn’t it all we want to do? To prove to everyone that we are actually the best at what we do.
Take a leaf from Rocky Balboa’s book and you will surely be able to succeed in what you do. To end with one of the most famous quotes from the movie, “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!“
